Wear OS and Tizen: why an older Galaxy Watch cannot take new faces

If every watch face app tells you your Galaxy Watch is not supported, nothing is broken. Samsung changed operating systems in 2021, and watch faces do not survive that change.

The split happened in 2021

If you have an older Galaxy Watch and every watch face app you try tells you your watch is not supported, nothing is wrong with your watch and nothing is wrong with the apps. Samsung changed the operating system underneath the Galaxy Watch in August 2021, and watch faces do not survive that change.

Before that, Samsung's watches ran Tizen, their own platform, going back to the Gear range in 2014. With the Galaxy Watch 4 they moved to Wear OS, Google's watch platform, rebuilt jointly with Google and wearing Samsung's One UI Watch interface on top. Every Galaxy Watch since has been a Wear OS watch, and every Galaxy Watch before it stayed a Tizen watch for good.

That is not a version boundary that time will erode. It is two different operating systems, and the watch you own was built for one of them.

Which one is on your wrist

By name, the line falls between the Watch 3 and the Watch 4 — which is confusing enough that it is worth writing out.

If the model name is not on your watch, the settings will tell you: on a Wear OS Galaxy Watch, Settings → About watch → Software information lists a Wear OS version and a One UI Watch version. Why a face cannot cross over

The reasonable assumption is that a watch face is a picture, and a picture should go anywhere. It is not. A watch face is a small program — it knows the time, redraws itself, reads the battery and the step count, hosts complications, and has a separate always-on state. It is written against the operating system it runs on.

A Tizen face is a .tpk package built with Samsung's Tizen tooling. A Wear OS face is an Android package, or on recent watches an XML description in Watch Face Format. Different file, different runtime, different APIs for every live value on the dial. There is no converter, and there could not usefully be one — the artwork would survive the trip and none of the behaviour would.

This is also why a designer whose Tizen face you liked cannot simply re-release it. Bringing a face across means rebuilding it in Samsung's Wear OS tool, Watch Face Studio, and that is real work per face. Most Tizen designers did not do it. They either moved on or started fresh, which is why the Tizen catalogue stopped growing rather than gradually migrating.

Be careful with sites that promise Tizen faces for a Watch 4 or newer, or the reverse. Nothing that downloads can make a package run on the wrong platform. A file that will not install is the harmless outcome; the other outcomes involve installing something unrelated to watch faces on your phone.

What a Tizen watch can still do

A Watch 3 or a Gear S3 is still a working watch with a working face gallery, and it is worth being clear about what remains available rather than leaving the impression that the screen is frozen.

The dials it came with still work, along with their colour and complication options. Long-press the dial to reach the gallery and Customize, exactly as before. For a lot of people this is the entire answer: the preloaded set on those watches was generous.

Faces you already installed stay installed. Nothing was taken away from your watch, and nothing needs to be re-downloaded to keep working. A face that is on the watch today will still be there next year.

What has stopped is new supply. Third-party developers moved to Wear OS years ago, because that is where the watches being sold are. Whatever is still reachable from a Tizen watch's store is old, and it does not grow. That is the real limitation, and no app on your phone can work around it.

We would rather say that plainly than sell you something. Our app cannot help a Tizen watch, will never be able to, and installing it on a phone paired with one would achieve nothing.

The second split, inside Wear OS

There is a second boundary that catches people who have already made it onto Wear OS, and it explains why these faces need Wear OS 6 rather than simply “Wear OS”.

For most of Wear OS's life, a watch face was a full Android app: it ran its own code on the watch, and installing one meant installing an app from the Play Store. That works, and it is why a face could quietly cost battery — arbitrary code, running all day, drawing a dial.

Watch Face Format replaced that with a description rather than a program. The face is XML: here is the background, here is the hour hand, here is where the step count goes. The watch's own system draws it, so it cannot run code of its own, cannot misbehave in the background, and is dramatically cheaper to render. Google and Samsung introduced it together, and it is now the format new watch faces are expected to use.

Wear OS 6 added the part this site depends on: Watch Face Push, an API that lets an approved phone-side app deliver one of those format faces straight to the watch, without publishing each face as its own Play Store listing. That is the mechanism behind the Apply button in our app, and it is why the requirement is a version and not a model — a watch below Wear OS 6 has nothing for the face to arrive through, whatever else it can do.

The practical shape of it: Tizen watches are out permanently, Wear OS watches below Wear OS 6 are out until they update, and everything from the Galaxy Watch 4onwards can reach Wear OS 6 with a free update.

Is it worth moving to a Wear OS watch

We build a Wear OS app, so treat the recommendation with the scepticism it deserves — but the honest answer is that watch faces alone are a thin reason to replace a watch that works. A Watch 3 that tells the time, tracks your sleep and lasts the day is not broken because its dial catalogue stopped growing.

The case for moving is the whole platform rather than the faces: current apps, current health features, security updates, and a device that will still be supported in a few years. New dials come along with that, and they are a nice part of it rather than the point of it.

If you do move, note that the oldest supported model is the Galaxy Watch 4, and a used one is inexpensive by now. It needs One UI 8 Watch, which it can get free, and from there it installs exactly the same faces a brand-new watch does — which is unusual, and worth knowing before spending more.

Can a Galaxy Watch 3 install Wear OS watch faces?

No, and no update will change it. The Galaxy Watch 3 runs Tizen, Samsung never released a Wear OS upgrade for it, and the two platforms share no code — a Wear OS watch face is an Android package that a Tizen watch has no way to run. The Galaxy Watch 4 is the oldest Samsung watch built on Wear OS.

What is the difference between a Tizen watch face and a Wear OS watch face?

They are different file formats for different operating systems. Can I update my Galaxy Watch 3 to Wear OS?

No. The switch to Wear OS came with new hardware, not with a software update, and Samsung has never offered an upgrade path for any Tizen watch. The Watch 3 still receives occasional maintenance updates within Tizen, but it will not become a Wear OS watch.

Why can my Galaxy Watch 4 install these faces when it is older than my Watch 6?

Because the requirement is the software version, not the model. Both can — a Watch 4 running One UI 8 Watch installs these faces and a Watch 6 that has never been updated does not. Wear OS 6 introduced the mechanism that puts a face on the watch from a phone app, and any watch that has reached it qualifies.

Is Samsung still making Tizen watches?

No. Every Galaxy Watch since the Watch 4 in 2021 has run Wear OS, developed jointly by Samsung and Google, with Samsung’s One UI Watch interface on top. Tizen continues to exist on Samsung televisions and appliances, but it is no longer the platform for their watches.
